Western and Western-Descended Folk Music in the Americas
The predominant cultural characteristics of the Americas were imported from various European countries, mainly Great Britain and the Hispanic peninsula. Some of them were retained in their old forms, some continued to develop and changed to forms quite different from those of the old countries, and some of course were spiced with elements of the Negro and Indian cultures also found in the New World. In music, too, we find ancient European forms preserved, but we also find European forms that have changed in peculiarly American ways, and we find the preservation of European forms to have been selective—those aspects which fit the American culture that happens to be involved may be kept, while others may |
